The Cartesian Coordinate System
The Cartesian Coordinate System consists of two coplanar perpendicular number lines. The horizontal number line is what we call as the x-axis while the vertical number line is what we call the y-axis. The intersection between the two axes is what we call as the origin. And the formed four regions are what we call as the quadrants.
Each point in the number line is named by a pair of coordinates. An example is pair (2,8). The first coordinate whist is 2 is the x-coordinate of the system or the abscissa. The abscissa tells the distance of the point from the x-axis (-) left to (+) right. The second coordinate is the 8 which is therefore the y-coordinate or the ordinate. The ordinate tells the distance of the point (+) up to (-) down.Labels: Math Addicks
